Apply to teach in the UK

As an overseas trained teacher you will need to apply for a qualified teaching status (QTS) to be recognised as a teacher in the UK. Once you arrive in the UK it is important to have all your documents, including your DBS check, national police check and any qualification certificates so that you can present them to your employer.

Making the move from Canada to London

As a Canadian citizen, you will need to apply for a visa to qualify to live and work in the UK, the Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme will be most suitable for you and it lasts up to years. It cost £230.00 to apply for this visa and you should receive a decision with 3 weeks but it is advised that you give yourself more time.

You will need to open a UK bank account, however this couldn’t be any simpler, all you need to do is get in touch with a bank and take some photographic evidence and a document that proves your address.

The current exchange rate is 1 Canadian dollar to 0.60 British pounds, but you can keep an eye on this exchange rate to make sure you get the best deal for your money.

We advise that you apply for a European Health Insurance Card whilst living in the UK to make sure that you are covered for any treatments you may need.

What do Canadian teachers need to know about teaching in London?

The typical school day begins at 9.00am and ends at 3:30pm, although your school hours may vary with after school activities, meetings and other duties. The school year operates from September to July which is usually broken down into three terms. As a teacher in the UK are allocated 13 weeks a year in holidays, now that really is amazing. Giving you plenty of opportunities to travel and explore we couldn’t think of a better job role.
