HLTA - Higher Level Teaching Assistant

What does a Higher Level Teaching Assistant do?

The responsibilities of a HLTA differ from those of a general TA, you will:

  • Support teaching and learning: a HLTA will assist teachers in planning, preparing, and delivering lessons to students, adapting materials to suit the needs of individual students, and supporting them with their learning.
  • Classroom management: a HLTA will help manage the classroom environment, implementing behavior management strategies, and ensuring that students are engaged and focused during lessons.
  • Cover supervision: a HLTA may be asked to cover for teachers when they are absent, supervising the class and delivering pre-planned activities to ensure continuity of learning
  • Assessment and feedback: a HLTA may be involved in assessing student progress, providing feedback to teachers and parents, and setting targets for improvement.

  • Supporting SEND students: a HLTA often works with students who have special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), providing individual support and guidance to help them overcome barriers to learning.

  • Liaising with parents and carers: a HLTA may communicate with parents and carers, providing feedback on student progress and discussing any concerns or issues that arise.
