The Learning Mentor Job

An Alternative Provision Centre in Ealing, West London are looking for a Learning Mentor to start after half term. This is a a long term, full time position and will run for the remainder of the academic year. You will be working with teenagers in Year 10 with Social Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties (SEBD).

The Learning mentor role is designed to help deal with behaviour and staff will remove problem students. The school is strict - no mobile phones, no eating or drinking in class, school uniform is strictly adhered to and slang or street talk is not tolerated. Learning mentors are treated more like teachers and many of the pupils don't know who is a teacher and who is a LM. Behaviour can be challenging but the school sets high expectations and staff treat the students like adults, give them space and make them talk out their issues.

The Learning Mentor Skills

They are looking for a passionate and experienced Learning Mentor who has the training and a good understanding of the young people's needs. The school specialises in Emotional and Social Behavioural Difficulties and has a Primary and Secondary department. You will be working in the secondary team supporting pupils on a 1:1 basis with their motivation and learning.

The School

Academic progress is at the forefront of their remit so they want staff who will push to improve results and get students through their GCSEs. It is strict so standards of behaviour, school uniform etc are enforced and they expect staff to present themselves in a professional manner in terms of dress, speech etc. The SLT is very strong (team of 4) and their offices are in amongst the classrooms so they are hands on and deal with issues at source so the teachers can teach. The school has a long standing middle management team and the majority of staff are more mature - they are open to younger staff(mid 30's) and they find that people who have worked in FE colleges are particularly effective.

This Ealing school itself is modern, bright and has excellent facilities. There is plenty of on site parking and due to the schools location it might be beneficial to be a driver as the bus service can be a little unreliable.
