Learning Support Assistant - PMLD

  • Special Needs Learning Support Assistant - PMLD
  • Experience of ASD, SLD or PMLD Welcomed
  • Excellent School Southwark
  • Minimum 1 Year Assignment
  • Immediate Start
  • £70 - £85 per day
  • Interviews ASAP

I am looking for an experienced, dedicated and pro-active Learning Support Assistant - PMLD to join a top SEN School in Southwark as soon as possible. I have a couple of positions available to start ASAP based in Special Needs Schools working small classes supporting children with PMLD and other complex cognitive difficulties. Pupils have complex learning and medical needs, most are wheelchair bound and are unable to communicate with the outside world - this means that a background in social care or nursing and some school based TA experience will be a huge advantage. You will be expected to support them with Hoisting, Manual Handling Needs and Personal Care (feeding, changing and toileting). There will be comprehensive on the job training and lots of support both through our client schools (induction training, PECS, Makaton and Team Teach) as well as free CPD from Reeson Education covering Safeguarding, Introduction to SEN, Phonics, Effective Listening, Behaviour Management etc.)

You will be working with students aged between 11 - 19, each with statements of Special Education Needs. Most of the children you will be working with have very limited communication skills, and some are completely non-verbal. You will be working either 1:1 with a particular student or supporting a class alongside a team of fellow LSAs and the class teacher.

The personal care duties will include:

  • PEG feeding
  • Changing the students
  • Feeding orally
  • Helping students to brush their teeth
  • Hoisting and manual handling

To be eligible to apply for this position, you will need to be available to start immediately, as well as being able to commit to working 8:30 - 4pm, 5 days per week in Southwark. You must have a good command of numeracy and literacy, as this is especially important when supporting pupils with limited communication skills.

Ideally, you will have the following experience:

  • PMLD experience
  • LSA or care experience
  • SEND experience
  • Experience in or willing to do personal care and manual handling
