The Job:

A well run and highly effective special school for Primary and Secondary pupils with Social Emotional and Mental Health needs based in the London borough of Lambeth in South London requires a Secondary trained PE teacher for a long term post starting in January. teaching KS3 & 4 students who do not attend mainstream schools due to exclusion and social/emotional behavioural difficulties. You would be tasked with leading PE and outdoors activities such as Duke of Edinburgh Award etc. up to GCSE Level to groups of no more that 10 pupils as part of their curriculum enrichment programme.

The Applicant:

The successful applicant for this vacancy will have previous experience teaching PE in either an inner city school or PRU/Alternative Provision Centre teaching KS3 and KS4 students. Strong classroom management skills, a good sense of humour, resilience and a characterful personality are all prerequisites for a job of this nature. The school need someone who first and foremost is a good teacher who can reach out to pupils who have hard home lives and naturally struggle with direction and building rapport with adults.

Benefits: The Headteacher is keen to stress that support and training is on offer for teachers who have never taught in an alternative provision setting. Behaviour is on the whole good (especially when compared to similar schools) although students can be challenging. The school have a team of highly trained in class support (TAs and Behaviour Mentors) to ensure that you get to teach instead of "crowd control". The school will have to advertise the permanent position to meet equal opportunities legislation but the successful applicant will clearly be at an advantage having spent two terms in school getting familiar with staff, students, whole school policies etc. This is a really good opportunity for a teacher who loves their subject and is passionate about the pastoral care side of the job.
