An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a leading state-maintained School as School Nurse or Welfare Officer, supporting the physical and emotional well being of all pupils.

The successful candidate will oversee the day-to-day running of the school's medical room, ensuring it is well-equipped to respond to medical situations. They will be part of the core safeguarding team, supporting the administration of attendance, safeguarding and SEND. The role will also involve leading a team of First Aid trained staff and working closely with numerous external agencies and the School's in-house Counsellor. With support and training, it is hoped the School Nurse will make a contribution to the assembly and personal development programmes on health-related topics.

Requirements for successful School Nurse or Welfare Officer:

  • Applicants will be a registered nurse or will be a School Welfare Officer, with appropriate experience/qualifications and a good understanding of safe working practices.
  • A good level of written and spoken English is essential. Initiative, problem-solving abilities, strong administration and sound time management are also needed.

  • The contractual terms will be agreed on appointment but it is anticipated that our new colleague will work 8.15am to 4pm, Monday to Friday, term-time only.

Main duties and responsibilities of School Nurse or Welfare Officer:

  • First line support for the physical and mental health of all pupils in the School.
  • Working with a team of First Aiders and the pastoral leaders to provide an excellent standard of care, including providing medical care for pupils who become unwell at school, as well as health promotion and support for ongoing medical issues.
  • Provide a responsive 'call out' service for all health-related emergencies at the School requesting emergency services as required.
  • Keep track of attendance monitoring across the school during the school day, with particularly close monitoring of high risk pupils, acting quickly when it is necessary to do so.
  • Carry out health assessments, contributing to safeguarding risk assessments, as required.
  • Maintaining clear detailed records of all care provided; recording administration of medication; managing pupils' medical records when they join and leave the School.
  • Working collaboratively with the School's Pastoral Leaders, Counsellor, outside agencies, wider school staff and parents to achieve the best outcomes for pupils.
  • Provide support and training for staff in relation to medical issues.
  • Provide appropriate first aid kits and medication kits for all off-site educational visits.
  • Provide health education advice, contributing to the assembly and Personal Development Programme as required.
  • Lead team of First Aiders ensuring their training is up to date and they are familiar with school procedures.
  • Treat and deal with accidents and emergencies within the School.
  • Ensure all first aid provision, including fixed boxes and portable kits, is maintained in line with school procedures.  Ensure medication is stored according to guidelines.
  • Participate in immunisation programmes, supporting Community School Nurses where required.
  • Manage the integration and support for pupils with severe medical conditions, ensuring appropriate care is given and care plans are regularly reviewed and updated.
  • Manage the School's accident reporting systems.
  • Administer record keeping relating to a broad range of safeguarding matters ensuring records are transferred securely from feeder schools.
  • Attend and contribute to meetings of the Health & Safety and Child Protection, Safeguarding & Well being committees.
  • Manage the appointments of the school counsellor with pupils and keep an up to date record of when they have taken place.
