I am seeking to appoint a class based SEN teacher to a small friendly special school based in the London borough of Harrow. This specialist Harrow SEN school is a specially developed centre for primary children with Autism (ASC) and other related needs including Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN), Complex special educational needs. Many pupils have underlying medical and physical needs.

The specific class that they are seeking to appoint an SEN teacher to is a mixed Y2/3 ASD class of 7 pupils. The class are all working between P Levels and national curriculum level 1s. The curriculum is a sensory one based loosely on the EYFS framework most of the children have low levels of communication competence as a result PECS is used each day in the classroom to support communication. The class is supported by three full time specially trained LSAs who will help support a smooth transition in class. The LSAs have been with the class for two years having moved up the school with the pupils since reception. As a result the successful applicant will benefit from their considerable insight and continuity in the classroom.

The school has a great reputation having achieved an outstanding OfSTED in 2015. The school had previously been rated as good but the staff worked really hard to implement the vision of the SLT and governors. The Headteacher is a visible and approachable presence in school who takes the time to get to know every pupil and member of staff personally. This personable approach and attention to detail has fostered a really positive and collaborate working environment where every member of staff from the lunchtime supervisors through to the Head feel part of a team that works through problems and celebrates success together.

The headteacher is looking for a highly skilled and enthusiastic SEN teacher for children with Autism in either Key Stages 1 and 2. The Head has made it clear that whilst experience teaching in a specialist SEN school would be advantageous the key criteria is to appoint a "good" or "outstanding" classroom teacher. This means that they welcome applications from mainstream teachers with some ASD knowledge, overseas trained teachers with excellent spoken and written English and phonics and NQTs.

The successful candidate will:

  • Be a proven "good" or "outstanding" teacher
  • The passion, drive and dedication to become an exceptional ASD classroom practitioner
  • Have a basic understanding of the EYFS or KS1 curriculum framework
  • Have the interpersonal skills to manage a large class team (3 LSAs) and to work collaboratively with multi-agency staff; the mainstream primary school and parents/carers.
  • Have a clear focus on achievement, progress and improving outcomes for ASD students and what allows these children to progress.
  • Be committed to inclusion and to enabling all pupils to succeed in all areas of their educational experiences in school and out in the wider community
