The SEN Teacher Job

A large special needs (SEN) school based in Ealing, West London is seeking an SEN teacher with some recent SLD experience to join their team from after the Easter break. Any experienced SEN teacher with UK or equivalent qualifications and experience are encouraged to apply today. The Headteacher is also happy to support experienced mainstream teachers make the move into an SEN teacher / school.

The School

The successful SEN teacher applicant will be joining a fantastic Ealing SEN school and teaching a mixed KS3 class of 8 pupils with Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD.) The majority of the children come from Ealing and the surrounding boroughs although some pupils come from all over London due to the skills, facilities and reputation that this fantastic school has. Many students have complex autism as well as additional medical and sensory needs as well as physical impairments. The class consists of 8 pupils from Years 9,10 and 11. Two of the pupils are in wheelchairs, two have visual impairments and one has down syndrome. All the pupils are all working at levels equivalent to those aged between 3 and 6 years old. As a result experience of the EYFS curriculum or primary could be advantageous, though not essential. The class is supported by two full time LSA/TAs and iPad gridplayer, Communication in Print and PECs to aid communication and social development.

The SEN Teacher Role

Much of the focus as an SEN teacher is on the delivery of a sensory curriculum with a particular focus on developing social and communication skills. You will be working alongside two really friendly learning support assistants (LSAs) who know the children and the school procedures and will help you get up to speed quickly. Some experience of PECS and gridplayer would be advantageous but training is available and both are inherently simplistic and therefore easy to pick up.

The Ideal SEN Teacher

The successful SEN teacher candidate will be flexible, with the ability to use their own initiative where required. Experience working in an SEN school or with SLD children would be an advantage but the school are clear that they want a good teacher first and foremost - excellent training is available.
