The School

This SEN school in Merton is looking for a qualified SEN Teacher to join their excellent team of staff from September. This Merton SEN school provides for children who have severe and complex learning difficulties. Classes are organised within the key stages (in exceptional circumstances this may change) and children are grouped in order to deliver outstanding teaching strategies to meet their needs.

It has has a large staff team comprising skilled and committed teachers, learning support assistants, mealtime supervisors, site manager, administrative staff and ICT support who are full supported by a range of other professionals (Therapists, Health Workers and their Family Support Team). The multidisciplinary team all work together to ensure the very best outcomes are met for all children.

The school is located in the London borough of Merton on the border with Wandsworth and is well served by public transport. Facilities at the school include a hydrotherapy pool, sensory rooms, a soft play room, a music therapy room and library. This will be their first full year in their new purpose built school building.

Senior leadership at the school have been praised for their promotion of effective teachers throughout the year and there are plenty of opportunities to progress. Comprehensive CPD plans are in place for all staff and the SLT are always looking at ways to help the staff to develop their skills base as this ultimately means that the children get the best outcomes.

The Job

As the appointed SEN Teacher you would be planning and delivering a range of lessons with a team of 3 learning support assistants. At this level, you would be teaching the EYFS curriculum. You would need to be able to differentiate lessons to cater for each student's specific needs and monitor their progress using individual learning plans in order to provide regular feedback to parents, guardians and therapists. As the children have reduced social skills you would be encouraging children to interact with each other and with others around the school. You would be preparing students to act independently and build positive and supportive relationships.

The Ideal SEN Teacher

Due to the needs of the children at this school, experience in using speech, language and communication aids would be desirable, however the school provides excellent training in Makaton and PECS to all new staff. In addition to this, the school trains each staff in Team Teach restraint techniques.

Experience delivering the EYFS curriculum would be advantageous however the Headteacher was keen to impress upon applicants that NQTs, experienced UK trained primary teachers and overseas trained primary teachers with QTS and UK based EYFS or SEN experience are all encouraged to apply!

The successful candidate would have prior experience in working with children with severe learning difficulties and be positive, flexible and enthusiastic. Children at this school may exhibit challenging and difficult behaviour and so experience in working with children with these needs would be advantageous.
