  • Full time position
  • Excellent Transport Links - Zone 3 (see below)
  • Start ASAP

An 'Outstanding' SEN school in Lambeth is looking for a number of experienced and approachable autism specialists for a range of SEN Teaching Assistant positions throughout the school starting as soon as possible working with Autistic pupils. These will be long term roles and the school have specifically asked about male staff to help balance up a gender disparity in the school team and also to work as an SEN Teaching Assistant with some of the young boys who need personal care and who respond better to men.

The SEN School

This SEN Teaching Assistant position is based in an outstanding Lambeth primary SEN school for children with severe learning difficulties, PMLD, ASD and complex medical needs.

The school educates pupils with:

  • Pupils with Severe Cognition and Learning Difficulties
  • Pupils with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties
  • Pupils with Complex Medical Needs

As well as Severe Cognition and Learning Difficulties, many pupils have Additional Disabilities including:

  • Sensory Impairments
  • Autism / Communication and Interaction Difficulties
  • Physical Disabilities
  • Epilepsy
  • Other Medical Needs
  • Any Associated Behavioural needs are addressed by the school in a positive way

The school has 11 classes each named after a colour for Key Stage 1 & 2 and insects for Early Years. Pupils are grouped in classes of approximately 6-8 pupils according to age and ability levels/needs grouped within the Foundation Stage/Key Stages 1 and 2 of the National Curriculum. Each class has a teacher and between 3 and 4 SEN teaching assistants working with the pupils. The school day is from 8.30am until 4pm.

The school building is purpose built to meet the needs of all the pupils with special educational needs and disabilities(SEND). The school has fantastic transport links connecting it to Clapham Junction (18 mins), Victoria (22 mins), London Bridge (32 mins), West Croydon (29 mins), Waterloo (25 mins), Kings Cross (39 mins), Euston (35 mins), Liverpool Street (40 mins) Paddington (48 mins) and even Stratford (53 mins).

SEN Teaching Assistant Role Information

For this position you will need to be either an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant who has worked with pupils who either have Severe Learning Difficulties or who are on the autistic spectrum or a Teaching Assistant (from mainstream Primary or Secondary) with a passion and desire for SEN work who is adaptable, keen to learn, resilient, positive and friendly.

You will mainly be working with Key Stage 1/2 pupils who all have a diagnosis of autism and SLD. They all have significant delay in their academic and social ability. Many of these students have limited communication skills and as a result experience working with students who have speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) would be advantageous. The school uses PECS and Makaton in class to support the student's communication development.

You will be working in a class alongside other experienced SEN TAs and a specialist SEN Teacher. The children are lovely, very rewarding to work with and enjoy school.

The SEN Teaching Assistant

The ideal candidate will have good ASD knowledge and some experience of PECS and Makaton but the key to the job is attitude and the school are very willing to train someone who shows passion and a willingness to get stuck in!

You will need to be able to work under your own initiative, have emotional intelligence, be mindful of your tone of voice/choice of words and body language, have good concentration levels, the ability to multitask and bring energy and enthusiasm to the job. Whilst behaviour isn't a major component of the work the children do occasionally go into crisis and positive handling techniques to prevent them from harming themselves or others are required as a result any training in Team Teach, PRICE or MAPA would be advantageous though not essential - REESON Education can upskill you with free Team Teach training once appointed.

Please note that personal care (feeding and changing) is a part of the job and applicants who wouldn't be prepared to undertake these tasks after training will not be considered for the post.
