The Job
My client: A mainstream primary school is looking for an experienced and approachable Teaching Assistant for a position starting in after half term working with Autistic pupils. For this position you will need to be an experienced Teaching Assistant who has worked with pupils who either have Severe Learning Difficulties or who are on the autistic spectrum.
You will mainly be working with Key Stage 2 pupils who all have a diagnosis of autism and have significant delay in their academic and social ability. Many of these students have limited communication skills and as a result experience working with students who have speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) would be advantageous. The school uses PECS and Makaton in class to support the student's communication development.
The School
This position is working in an 'Outstanding' SEN school in Barnet which caters for children aged 2 - 11 years who have severe learning difficulties and complex needs. This includes children with additional needs, such as physical or sensory, and some children on the Autism Spectrum.
The school has a large staff team comprising skilled and committed teachers, learning support assistants, mealtime supervisors, site manager, administrative staff and ICT support who are full supported by a range of other professionals.
Please note that personal care (feeding and changing) is a part of the job and applicants who wouldn't be prepared to undertake these tasks after training will not be considered for the post.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have good ASD knowledge and some experience of PECS and Makaton but the key to the job is attitude and the school are very willing to train someone who shows passion and a willingness to get stuck in!
