  • Southwark LA

  • Excellent TAs (3 full time)

An outstanding SEN school in Southwark, SE London that caters for children who have severe learning difficulties, including autistic spectrum disorders is seeking to appoint a primary Special Needs Teacher for the first two terms of the academic year to cover an SEN teacher who will be undergoing surgery in late September for an ongoing health issue.

OfSTED said "Teaching is consistently outstanding throughout the school. Teachers and other adults support the pupils exceptionally well in activities which are very carefully tailored to their learning needs and abilities."

The class itself consists of 6 pupils (mixed Y1/2) who are attaining in line with the EYFS P2 - P6 levels. In class you will have the support of three outstanding friendly and hardworking TAs full time in class. You will also benefit from a bright and modern classroom due to a total refurbishment of the classroom over the summer. Classes are well resourced and staff are encouraged to approach SLT about any resources or ideas they have to help improve the learning environment and the well-being of the pupils.

They ideally would like their new Special Needs Teacher to have a handover period to ensure that you have sufficient time and support whilst you get to know the pupils, your TAs, whole school policies and the rest of the team in school. Experience teaching SLD pupils is important but the Head welcomes applications from experienced mainstream primary teachers and overseas trained teachers - Australian and Kiwi teachers in particular are encouraged to apply and join what they jokingly call "Team Antipodes".

The appointed Special Needs Teacher will be joining a professional, caring, friendly and well organised school. All teaching and support staff are trained in Makaton and PECS symbols are used creatively to develop communication.

The school offers an extensive training and development programme for its staff. All staff participate in on-going training in Makaton, PECS, Team-Teach, TEACCH and First Aid. The school regularly organises external organisations to lead training in Autism and Safeguarding. They also offer training led by their on site Multi-Disciplinary Team.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Special Needs Teacher - apply today for an interview ASAP
