The Teaching Assistant Job

We are currently looking for an experienced teaching assistant to join an outstanding SEN school in the Borough of Camden. The school caters for students aged 2 - 19 with a range of learning disabilities including Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Moderate Learning Disabilities (MLD), Severe Learning Disabilities (SLD) and Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD). In addition to these primary needs, many students also have Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) or Social, Emotional and Mental Health Issues (SEMH).

The SEN School

The school is divided into three divisions based on the needs of the children (MLD, SLD and PMLD) for the lower and upper schools. You would be working in the lower school SLD class, alongside 2 other teaching assistants to help the teacher in a class of around 6 students. Students at this level would be following a semi-formal curriculum and would be working at P levels 4-7. In addition to providing extra support in their lessons, you would be helping the children to develop independence, learn life and functional skills and develop their social interaction skills.

You would need to be patient, compassionate and enthusiastic, and have a positive attitude in order to help the children feel safe within the school. The successful candidate would have excellent communication skills in order to work effectively with Teachers, Therapists, Support Staff and Parents.

Due to the needs of the children, experience in using Makaton, Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and Visual Communication Aids would be advantageous.
