The SEN Teacher Job

My client is an excellent, friendly, supportive and well run SEN school based in the Barnet. They are seeking to appoint a creative and skillful SEN Teacher to join their team from September.

They are seeking to appoint an SEN teacher who is able to demonstrate both excellent classroom practice and an up-to-date understanding of the latest developments in special needs best practise. The class will be a mixed upper KS2 ASD/SLD group of 8 pupils supported by 3 full time specialist SEN Teaching Assistants.

The SEN School

This vibrant and hugely successful Barnet SEN school offers outstanding educational provision. They work with young people, aged 2 - 11 years who have severe learning difficulties and complex needs. The population includes children with additional needs, such as physical or sensory, and some children on the Autism Spectrum.

Classes are organised within the key stages (in exceptional circumstances this may change) and children are grouped in order to deliver outstanding teaching strategies to meet their needs.

You will be joining a friendly school in the southern end of the Borough of Barnet that has good transport links. It has a large staff team comprising skilled and committed teachers, learning support assistants, mealtime supervisors, site manager, administrative staff and ICT support who are full supported by a range of therapists and health, family support professionals. The multidisciplinary team all work together to ensure the very best outcomes are met for all children.

The school was built in the late 1950s by Barnet Borough Council. Since then, it has undergone continued and ongoing remodelling, enlargement and refurbishment to provide it with an extensive range of facilities including a hydrotherapy pool, a soft play environment to support Physical Development, Communication, Social Interaction and to provide a safe place to play, and a challenging and safe environment for children of all ages and abilities. They have a sensory room with many attractive sound and light features to support visual stimulation and assessment, as well as opportunities for shared play and interaction and a multi-sensory den, which is themed to follow the school topic, to enhance the children's learning experiences.

There is a range of shared equipment to bring lessons to life including eye gaze technology, enabling a child to access a computer; a sensory trolley to turn any class into a sensory room; and a floor projector which turns the floor into an interactive multi-sensory space.

The classrooms, are well resourced with specialist equipment and a wealth of other teaching equipment for the full range of children in the school. Classrooms have a large interactive plasma screen, connected to a computer and software appropriate for a range of Special Educational Needs, as well as iPads with stimulating apps. Where appropriate classes have additional communication aids, some using speech as well as a range of switches to increase pupils' access to the curriculum.

The SEN Teacher Applicant

The successful applicant will need to be able to demonstrate the ability to deliver fun, creative, interesting lessons designed to increase stimulate independent thought, interaction and sensory engagement amongst pupils.

You will hold qualified teacher status (QTS) and will have a sound basic understanding of autism having either taught pupils with ASD in an SEN or mainstream class setting. You will be familiar with alternative communication tools such as PECS and Makaton and will have a basic understanding of the cognitive behaviour therapy techniques espoused in the TEACCH approach to supporting autistic learners. You will also have a proven track record of good or outstanding teaching.

Experience teaching an ASD/SLD class in a similar UK SEN school would be beneficial although as the class are well behaved and the support staff amongst the strongest in the school and the Headteacher is very happy to support primary trained teachers with a good track record and an interest in SEN.

SEN Teacher Benefits

  • MPS-UPS Salary + SEN Point.
  • You will be joining a successful and vibrant SEN school.
  • As a SEN teacher you will be given excellent in house training.
  • Supported by an outstanding team of TAs who are supportive and open to clear direction.
  • Good location well served by public transport
  • The SLT believe in a healthy work life balance, encouraging staff to go home at a reasonable time
