SEN Teacher

  • SEN Teacher (SLD)
  • 1 Year Contract
  • Ealing LA
  • Full time
  • Starting September
  • Pay depending on experience

The Job

A large special needs (SEN) school based in Ealing, West London is seeking a SEN Teacher with some recent SLD experience to join their team from September. Ideally the successful SEN Teacher applicant will have a proven track record working in an SEN environment but the Headteacher will consider a primary trained teacher with a passion for SEN, a proven track record as a teacher and a can do attitude. This will be an initial one year assignment but the school are keen to stress that they are seeking to appoint staff to permanent contracts and that there is flexibility in the timescale for this - in theory you could be on a permanent contract from Christmas, Easter or September dependent upon performance in the role.

The SEN Teacher Role

The successful SEN Teacher applicant will be teaching a mixed KS1 class (6 pupils) with Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD.) The majority of the children have additional medical and sensory needs as well as physical impairments. The class consists of 6 pupils who are all working at P levels, as a result experience of the EYFS curriculum would be advantageous, though not essential. Much of the work you would be doing will be based loosely on the Early Years curriculum with a particular focus on developing social and communication skills. You will be working alongside two really friendly learning support assistants (LSAs) who know the children and the school procedures and will help you get up to speed quickly. Some experience of PECS and makaton would be advantageous but training is available

The Ideal SEN Teacher

The successful SEN Teacher candidate will be flexible, with the ability to use their own initiative where required. Experience working in an SEN school or with SLD children would be an advantage but the school are clear that they want a good teacher first and foremost - excellent training is available. They would be more than happy to support an excellent practitioner with passion for SEN but limited SEN experience. You must be able to commit to at least a 12 month contract based in Ealing.

Some children have challenging behaviours but good strategies and systems are in place to support this, however a calm personality and a good sense of humour are considered essential attributes. Progress with these pupils can be slow when compared to their contemporaries so patience, a caring nature, passion for the job and strong self belief will be essential.

The School

This Ealing SEN school is an Outstanding Local Authority managed special school for children aged 4-11yo catering for children with complex learning difficulties including autism and other sensory impairments. Pupils come from both within the Ealing borough and for the wider London community with some learners coming from as far afield as Greenwich to access the fantastic teaching and learning on offer.

As an Outstanding school they are looking for outstanding practitioners who can contribute to the continued success. In return the school offers diverse opportunities for continual professional development and career progression. the school has also been designated as a Teaching School. The school is a rewarding and inspiring place to work where staff are very proud of the achievements of the children they work with.

  • Friendly supportive school

  • Outstanding training opportunities
  • Good rate of pay from day one
