Teaching Assistant - SLCN Unit - Lambeth

The Role

A forward-thinking primary school in Lambeth is seeking a dedicated Teaching Assistant to join their specialist unit supporting pupils with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).

This provision sits within a mainstream setting and supports a small group of pupils who require targeted communication and language interventions alongside access to the wider curriculum. The successful Teaching Assistant will work closely with the unit lead, SENCO, and external professionals to provide structured, consistent support.

This is a highly rewarding role for someone passionate about communication development and inclusive practice.


Key Responsibilities

  • Supporting pupils with identified SLCN in small-group and one-to-one sessions

  • Delivering structured speech and language programmes under guidance

  • Using visual aids, communication boards, and tailored resources

  • Encouraging social interaction and language development through play and structured learning

  • Supporting pupils' integration into mainstream classroom activities where appropriate

  • Providing feedback to teachers and contributing to progress reviews


The Ideal Candidate

The school is looking for a Teaching Assistant who:

  • Has experience supporting children with SLCN or similar SEND profiles

  • Understands strategies to support expressive and receptive language needs

  • Is patient, nurturing, and highly consistent

  • Can follow structured intervention plans confidently

  • Works well as part of a multidisciplinary team

Experience working alongside Speech and Language Therapists or knowledge of communication-focused strategies is highly desirable.
